This book presents in a systematic manner different stability and stabilization results for continuous- and discrete-time switched systems under various switching mechanisms. The book is organized in five chapters. The basic notions are introduced in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 focuses on the guaranteed stability analysis under arbitrary switching. The equivalence between marginal/asymptotic stability and the existence of common strong/weak Lyapunov function is established for general switched nonlinear systems. The emphasis is laid on the sets of functions which are universal in the sense that each asymptotically stable system admits a Lyapunov function from this set. Both piecewise linear functions and piecewise quadratic functions are proven to be universal. Also, their connections to different algebraic criteria are established. It is shown for the case of discrete-time switched linear systems that the largest Lyapunov exponent is equal to the joint/generalized spectral radius, and asymptotic stability implies that the spectral radius is less than one. Suitable semi-definite programming technique is proposed to approximate the spectral radius. Chapter 3 presents stability results for switched dynamical systems under constrained switching. In the first part, different stability concepts for jump linear systems are introduced and corresponding stability criteria are presented. The second part is devoted to the study of piecewise affine systems where the state space is partitioned into a set of polyhedral sets, each relating to a subsystem. The piecewise Lyapunov approach, the surface Lyapunov approach and the transition graph approach are shown to be useful for the stability analysis. In the third part, the dwell-time stability (the dwell-time is preassigned) and stabilizability switching design (the minimum or maximum dwell-time is to be designed) are investigated. Chapter 4 is devoted to the stabilizing switching design for switched dynamical systems under controlled switching. It is proved that a switched nonlinear system is asymptotically stabilizable iff it admits a smooth Lyapunov function. A class of nonconvex piecewise quadratic functions (min functions) is introduced. It is proved that each asymptotically stabilizable switched linear system admits a min function as a switched Lyapunov function. Moreover, a computational procedure is proposed for calculating a stabilizing path-wise state-feedback. The last Chapter 5 provides a broader view on switched dynamical systems by considering absolute stability of planar Luré systems, adaptive control via supervisory switching, stability analysis of fuzzy systems via piecewise switching, consensus of multiagent systems with proximity graphs and stabilizing design of controllable switched linear systems. The book provides a state-of-the-art of the stability issues for switched dynamical systems. It can be of interest to researchers and automatic control engineers. Also, it can be used as a complementary reading for postgraduate students of the nonlinear systems theory.
