Starting with Minkowski's fundamental theorem the author surveys the development of the geometry of numbers highlighting the contributions by Philipp Furtwängler, Nikolaus Hofreiter, and Edmund Hlawka from Vienna. The final sections deal with the interactions between the geometry of numbers and Diophantine approximation and then convex and discrete geometry to which the Vienna school greatly contributed (Wolfgang M. Schmidt and Peter M. Gruber).
