    The first order Cauchy problems having the form \[ u'_n(t) +A_n(u_n) =0, \quad t>0, \quad u_n(0)=x_n \] are under consideration in a Banach space. Here \(A_n\) denotes a nonlinear operator with the homogeneity condition \[ A_n(\lambda u)= \lambda^{m_n}A_n(u), \quad \lambda>0. \] The question is, what happens when \({m_n}\to \infty\). Some initial insight on the problem of singular limits is given in the introduction considering the rescaled function \[ v_n(t):=\lambda^{1\over{m_n-1}}u_n(\lambda t) \] that solves the problem \[ v'_n +A_n(v_n) =0, \quad t>0, \quad v_n(0)=\lambda^{1\over{m_n-1}}x_n. \] The general result on the abstract singular limit is as follows. Theorem: There exists a nonlinear operator \(Q: \;X_0\to C\) such that if \(x_n\in\overline{D(A_n)}\) and \(x_n\to x\) \((n=1,2,\dots)\), then \(e^{-t A_n} x_n \to Q x\) uniformly for \(t\) in compact subsets of \((0,\infty)\). Here \[ C:=\{x\in X| \;\text{ \;there \;exist} \;(x_n,y_n)\in A_n \;\text{ with} \;x_n\to x, \;y_n \to0\} \;\text{ and} \quad X_0:=\overline{\bigcup_{\lambda>0}\lambda C}. \] Some examples of Cauchy problems for PDEs are given.
