The paper has its roots in the theory of the classical dynamical Yang-Baxter (CDYBE) equation for a pair \((g, l \subset g)\) of Lie algebras [cf. \textit{J. Balog, L. Dabrowski} and \textit{L. Feher}, Phys. Lett., B 244, No. 2, 227--234 (1991; Zbl 0724.58069); \textit{G. Felder}, `Proceedings of the international congress of mathematicians, ICM '94, August 3-11, 1994, Zürich, Switzerland. Vol. II. Basel: Birkhäuser. 1247--1255 (1995; Zbl 0852.17014)]. In [[1] Commun. Math. Phys. 192, No. 1, 77--120 (1998; Zbl 0915.17018)], \textit{P. Etingof} and \textit{A. Varchenko} demonstrated that this equation supplemented by a condition of \(l\)-equivalence is equivalent to the Jacobi identity for the natural Poisson bracket of the trivial groupoid \(U \times G \times U,\) where \(G\) is a Lie group with \(Lie(G) = g\) and \( U \subset l^{\ast}\) is an \(l\)-invariant open set. In [\textit{L.-C. Li} and \textit{S. Parmentier}, Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 824 (2005; Zbl 1065.58013)], Poisson groupoids structures on \(U \times G \times U\) compatible with the natural inclusion of the Hamiltonian unit were described -- the so-called dynamical Poisson groupoids of [1]. The Jacobi identity of such a bracket is equivalent to 3 sets of equations labelled (A), (B) and (C) in the paper. The main purpose of the paper, as stated by the authors, is to relate the above structures to Lie quasi-bialgebras. They extend, with some natural assumptions, the Etingot-Schiffmann description of the moduli space [cf. \textit{P. Etingof} and \textit{O. Schiffmann}, Math. Res. Lett. 8, No. 1--2, 157--170 (2001; Zbl 0994.17006)], to Equations (A)--(C), obtaining an interesting construction in terms of the associated Lie quasi-bialgebra. The paper contains also a study of the duality theory for Poisson groupoids in terms of a more algebraic duality for Lie quasi-bialgebras. For example, the dual Poisson groupoid of the dynamical Poisson groupoid associated with Lie quasi-bialgebra \({\mathcal{G}}\) is isomorphic to the source connected, simply connected covering of the dynamical Poisson groupoid associated with \(l^{\text{can}}\) for \({\mathcal{G}}^{\ast}.\) A forthcoming paper will be dedicated to the development of the theory, in particular to the corollaries of this theorem.
