For homeomorphisms \(f: G\to G'\) which are differentiable a.e. and absolutely continuous on lines, it is known that they are quasiconformal if (and only if) the mapping \(u\to u\circ f\) is a bijective isomorphism of the spaces BMO(G') and BMO(G) such that \(C^{-1}\| u\|_{*,G'}\leq \| u\circ f\|_{*,G}\leq C\| u\|_{*,G'}\) with some constant \(C\geq 1\) [the reviewer, Comment. Math. Helv. 49, 260- 276 (1974; Zbl 0289.30027)]. The author shows that the regularity assumption can be dropped, if one instead requires that the above inequality should hold for BMO functions with respect to arbitrary subdomains \(D\subset G\) and their images \(fD=D'\). The proof is based on the notion of a uniform domain and on a modified version of an extension theorem of \textit{P. Jones} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 29, 41-66 (1980; Zbl 0432.42017)].
