The authors address optical bistability in nonlinear periodic structures of finite and semi-infinite length (photonic gratings). The paper starts with general mathematical framework including Hamiltonian formalism. Next spatial symplectic dynamics is introduced and the existence and bifurcation diagrams for stationary solutions are discussed. Stability and instability results for finite and semi-infinite domains are obtained.
