The author discusses the solvability of a finite system of max-min fuzzy relation equations, investigating the structure of the data set. After some preliminary sufficient conditions given in Section 2, two methods based on hierarchical clustering techniques and decoupling fuzzy sets are proposed for constructing an approximate solution of the system. Reviewer's remark: Some results need a revision (e.g., in Proposition 6, the inequality \((a_ i\wedge a_ j)\alpha c\leq (a_ i\alpha c)\wedge (a_ j\alpha c)\), \(a_ i,a_ j,c\in [0,1]\), is not generally true).
