\textit{R. Bellmann} and \textit{M. Giertz} [Inf. Sci. 5, 149-156 (1973; Zbl 0251.02059)] characterized, in the context of fuzzy set theory, the max and min operators of the unit interval by means of six axioms. The authors show that this characterization, justified by simple set theoretic properties, can be made using only three suitable axioms. Some examples prove the independence of the conditions given.
