The \(q\)-monotone approximation of a function \(f\) can be qualified by means of Whitney-type or Jackson-type inequality involving the modulus of continuity of \(f^{(q)}\). The authors list all cases where the Whitney estimates are true and where they are invalidated for the piecewise coconvex \((q=2)\) approximation. Some negative results for the Jackson inequality with arbitrary \(q\) are also proved.
