This paper is a continuation of the author's preceding paper [J. Algebra 240, No. 2, 589-607 (2001; see the preceding review Zbl 0978.20007)]. In the present paper, the author applies the method shown in that paper to the groups \(\text{SL}_3(p^n)\) and \(\text{SU}_3(p^n)\) to get explicit formulas for the multiplicities of decomposition numbers. Moreover, he shows that for \(\lambda\) a weight deep enough in the interior of a \(p\)-restricted alcove, the number of times a given integer \(k\) occurs as a decomposition number in the column corresponding to a projective indecomposable character \(\Phi_{\lambda,n}\) has a generating function which is a combination of a rational function and a Dirichlet series. This result gives an alternative approach to determining the Cartan invariants, and recovers the reviewer's earlier result on the first Cartan invariant of \(\text{SL}_3(p^n)\) and \(\text{SU}_3(p^n)\) [in Lect. Notes Math. 1185, 388-400 (1986; Zbl 0622.20035)].
