The author uses the method of approximate summation from \textit{M. Slemrod} [Constitutive relations for monatomic gases based on a generalized rational approximation to the sum of Chapman-Enskog expansion, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 150, No. 1, 1-22 (1999; Zbl 0946.76087)] to eliminate unphysical instabilities from the Chapman-Enskog expansion for rapid flows of inelastic spheres. This yields constitutive relations for the pressure (deviator) tensor \(P\) and the heat flux vector \(q\), which turns out to be consistent with decrease the mechanical energy and increase the entropy for the flows under consideration.
