Let \({\mathcal B}\) denote a convex body in \(s\)-dimensional Euclidean space whose boundary is sufficiently smooth and of finite nonzero Gaussian curvature throughout. With \(t\) a large real variable, the paper under review is concerned with the number \(A_{\mathcal B}(t)\) of (integer) lattice points in the linearly dilated body \(t{\mathcal B}\). The author ultimately establishes the asymptotic formula \[ A_{\mathcal B}(t) = \text{ vol}({\mathcal B}) t^s + O(t^{s-2+\lambda(s)+\varepsilon}) \] for any \(\varepsilon>0\), where \(\lambda(3)=20/43,\;\lambda(4)=6/17,\;\lambda(s)=(s+4)/(s^2+s+2)\) for \(s\geq 5\). This significantly improves upon earlier bounds of \textit{E.~Hlawka} [Monatsh. Math. 54, 1-36 (1950; Zbl 0036.30902)] and \textit{E.~Krätzel} and \textit{W. G. Nowak} [Acta Arith. 62, 285-295 (1992; Zbl 0769.11037)]. To obtain this result, the author develops an ingenious theory for the estimation of multi-dimensional exponential sums which (apart from very special cases, e.g., monomials) yields the sharpest estimates possible at the present state of art.
