The authors establish infinite classes of finite trigonometric identities involving Dirichlet characters, special cases of which were originally derived as corollaries of difficult theta function identities in Ramanujan's notebooks. The current methods are based on residue calculus, they avoid theta functions, and they evaluate trigonometric sums in terms of class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields.
