The abstract Cauchy problem in integral form is to solve the equation (1) \(u(t)=F(t,u(\cdot))\) in a scale of Banach spaces \(\{X_{\rho};0\leq \rho \leq \rho_ 0\}\). Here, for any \(0<\rho '<\rho <\rho_ 0\) and any function \(u(\cdot)\in C([0,\tau],X_{\rho})\) which is bounded by some fixed \(R>0\), the mapping \(t\mapsto F(t,u(\cdot))\) is an \(X_{\rho '}\)- valued continuous function on [0,\(\tau\) ], F(t,u(\(\cdot))\) satisfies a sort of Lipschitz condition with respect to u(\(\cdot)\), and F(t,0) also satisfies some boundedness condition. The author gives a simplified proof (using only the contraction mapping principle) of the abstract Cauchy- Kowalewski theorem on existence and uniqueness of a solution of (1). He also extends this theorem to the abstract nonlinear integral equation \[ u(t)=F(t,u(\cdot))+\int^{t}_{0}E(t,s)G(s,u(\cdot))ds. \] The precise assumptions on F,G,E are too technical to be reproduced here.
