The author provides an almost black-box method for a multilevel approximation of matrices occurring in the boundary element method. This leads to a significant compression of the stiffness matrix without loosing the asymptotic approximation property of the Galerkin method. Some numerical experiments show the efficiency of the multilevel approximation.
