The self-intersection number of a smooth, compact, holomorphic curve, which is a leaf of a holomorphic foliation of a complex surface, is known to be zero. The present author examines in special situations (plane algebraic curves) the converse problem whether a holomorphic curve with zero self-intersection number on a complex surface can be made a leaf of a foliation on the surface.
