For a square-free integer \(D=m^ 2+r\) \((-m<r\leq m)\), the real quadratic field \(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt D)\) is said to be of narrow R--D type if \(r=\pm 1\) or \(\pm 4\). In this paper, the authors intend to determine all real quadratic fields of narrow R--D type with class number two. Namely, in addition to usual methods obtained by applying Tatuzawa's theorem on lower bound for \(L(1,\chi)\) to Dirichlet's class number formula, they use the theory of the 2-part of the ideal class group of quadratic fields and show that there exist 28 real quadratic fields of narrow R--D type with class number two except for one more possibility. For \(r=1\) or 4, there is a paper by \textit{M.-G. Leu} [J. Number Theory 33, 101-109 (1989; Zbl 0693.12007)].
