Let $G$ be a finite graph whose vertices are closed unit intervals on the real line, and whose edges join overlapping unit intervals. \par A conjecture by \textit{R. P. Stanley} and \textit{J. R. Stembridge} [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 62, No. 2, 261--279 (1993; Zbl 0772.05097)] states that the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of the graph $G$ is a nonnegative combination of elementary symmetric functions. \par Motivated by the above conjecture, \textit{J. Shareshian} and \textit{M. L. Wachs} [Adv. Math. 295, 497--551 (2016; Zbl 1334.05177)] conjectured that the characteristic map takes the character of the dot action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to $\omega X_G(t)$, where $X_G(t)$ is the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the graph $G$ (a polynomial in $t$ that reduces to $X_G$ for $t=1$) and $\omega$ is the usual involution on symmetric functions. \par In this manuscript the authors prove the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.
