    The authors discuss the solving of nonlinear operator equations in a Banach space by a modified Newton method. They prove a Kantorovich type theorem for convergence of the sequence generated by this method to the solution of the operator equation. It is known that the Newton method is convergent of order 2, but by the modified Newton method it is possible to provide third order convergence (for example the famous Halley's method and Chebyshev's method are modified Newton's methods of order 3). The authors propose a new modified Newton method, also of order 3. For proving the convergence theorem, the so called ``majorizing function'' is used. Two numerical examples are performed, by applying the new modified Newton's method.
