    The Poisson equation on a bounded polygonal domain in two space dimensions is considered using for discretization a finite element method with discontinuous P1 elements. A weakly over-penalized symmetric interior penalty method is then applied which is characterized by the fact that it satisfies the correct error estimates in both the energy norm, the symmetric positive-definiteness of the underlying continuous problem is conserved and it does not require any tuning of the penality parameter. In addition the resulting stiffness matrix has a structure which is suitable for parallelism. A major drawback is however the condition number which grows as \(h^{-4}\) instead of \(h^{-2}\) which is typical for second-order problems. In the current work a two-level Schwarz preconditioners are constructed and estimates for the condition numbers are derived. Finally numerical results are reported which illustrate and compare the performance of these preconditioners.
