A statistical mechanical method for the rigid rod and the freely joined chain models is used to describe the kinetics and rheology of freely rotating chains. Equilibrium results obtained from the kinetic theory are compared with the ''random walk'' values. Elongational viscosity and molecular extension are determined as a function of the elongation rate. The effects of the chain stiffness of some rheological properties are compared with those for the Kirkwood Riseman chain, the Kramers chain, and the rigid rod with three beads.
