This paper is concerned with obtaining ratio ergodic theorems for strongly continuous semigroups of linear contractions on \(L^{1}(\mu)\), where \(\mu \) is a \(\sigma \)-finite measure. A continuous version of the Chacon-Ornstein theorem [\textit{R. V. Chacon} and \textit{D. S. Ornstein}, Ill. J. Math. 4, 153--160 (1960; Zbl 0134.12102)] for semigroups of positive contractions on \(L^{1}(\mu)\) is given, as well as of the multiparameter Chacon-Ornstein theorem of \textit{N. E. Frangos} and \textit{L. Sucheston} [Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 71, 477--490 (1986; Zbl 0594.60009)]. Local ratio ergodic theorems for semigroups of positive contractions on \(L^{1}(\mu)\) are proved, using a local type continuous parameter version of the Sucheston principle [\textit{L. Sucheston}, Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 63, 43--49 (1983; Zbl 0528.60038)]. Some applications to the convergence of mutiparameter martingales are provided.
