The authors study the defocusing (-) (resp. focusing (+)) nonlinear Schrödinger equation \(iu_{t}+\Delta u\mp \left| u\right| ^{\alpha }u=0\) posed in the unit ball \(B_{2}\) of \(\mathbb{R}^{2}\) (resp \(B_{d}\) of \(\mathbb{ R}^{d}\)) with \(\alpha =2\mathbb{N}\) (resp. \(\frac{4}{d}\)). The initial condition \(u(0,x)=\phi \) and the homogeneous boundary condition \(u(t,x)=0\) on the boundary of the unit ball are imposed. They also introduce the approximate problem \(iu_{t}+\Delta u\mp P_{N}(\left| u\right| ^{\alpha }u)=0\) involving the frequency truncation operator \(P_{N}\) defined through \[ P_{N}(\sum_{n\in \mathbb{N}}a_{n}e_{n}(x))=\sum_{n\in \mathbb{N} ;z_{n}\leq N}a_{n}e_{n}(x) \] where \((e_{n},z_{n}^{2})\) is the sequence of eigenelements of \(-\Delta \) with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. A function \(u\in C_{t}(I;H_{x}^{\sigma }(B_{d}))\) for some \(\alpha <1/2\) is a solution to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation if it satisfies \[ u(t)=\phi \pm \int_{0}^{t}e^{i(t-\tau )\Delta }[\left| u(\tau )\right| ^{\alpha }u(\tau )]d\tau \] in the interval \(I\) and a similar equality for the approximate problem. The first main result of the paper proves the existence of a function \(u_{\ast }\in C_{t}([0,T);H_{x}^{s}(B_{2}))\) with \(s<1/2\) in the defocusing case such that \(u_{N}\) converges to \(u_{\ast }\) in this space, assuming \(\alpha =2\mathbb{N} \). The second main result proves a similar result but in the focusing case, assuming \(\alpha =2\) and replacing the above space by \( C_{t}([0,T);H_{x}^{s}(B_{d}))\). For the proof of these convergence results, the authors establish arithmetic bounds for the eigenvalues \(z_{n}^{2}\) in boxes. They also prove probabilistic estimates for the Gibbs measure associated to the approximate problem.
