Let \(H\) be a separable, infinite-dimensional, complex Hilbert space and let \(L(H)\) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators from \(H\) into \(H\). For \(T \in L(H)\), let \({\sigma}_{e}(T)\) denote the essential (Calkin) spectrum of \(T\) and \(D\) denote the open unit disc in the complex plane with \(B\) the boundary of \(D\). A set \(E \subset D\) is called dominating for \(B\) if almost every point of \(B\) with respect to the arclength measure is a nontangential limit of a sequence of points from \(E\), and a completely nonunitary contraction \(T \in L(H)\) is called a (BCP)-operator if \({\sigma}_{e}(T)\cap D\) is dominating for \(B\). In the paper under review, the authors deal with the question whether every operator \(T \in L(H)\) whose spectral radius and norm coincide has a nontrivial invariant subspace. They study a class of square roots of invertible (BCP)-operators for this question and give a positive answer in certain cases.
