Summary: This paper is concerned with the following nonlinear second-order nonautonomous problem: \[ \ddot u(t)+ q(t)\dot u(t)-\nabla K(t,u(t))+\nabla W(t,u(t))= 0, \] where \(t\in\mathbb{R}\), \(u\in\mathbb{R}^N\) and \(K,W\in C^1(\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^N,\mathbb{R})\) are not periodic in \(t\) and \(q: \mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) is a continuous function and \[ Q(t)= \int^t_0 q(s)\,ds \] with \(\lim_{|t|\to+\infty}Q(t)= +\infty\). The existence and multiplicity of fast homoclinic solutions are established by using the mountain pass theorem and the symmetric mountain pass theorem in critical point theory.
