    The author puts an end to a series of articles on a topic open for nearly thirty years. He shows that every closed subgroup \(H\) of a locally compact group \(G\) is \(p\)-Ditkin (\(1 < p < \infty\)). This generalizes a property which is classical for locally compact \textit{abelian} groups (every closed subgroup is a Ditkin set). Partial results were previously obtained by the author [Monatsh. Math. 101, 95--113 (1986; Zbl 0583.43007); J. Funct. Anal. 247, No. 1, 231--251 (2007; Zbl 1127.43003)], \textit{J. Delaporte} and the author [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 129, No. 5, 1427--1435 (2001; Zbl 0957.43001)], \textit{B. Forrest} et al. [J. Funct. Anal. 203, No. 1, 286--304 (2003; Zbl 1039.46042)] and \textit{J. Ludwig} and \textit{L. Turowska} [J. Funct. Anal. 233, No. 1, 206--227 (2006; Zbl 1088.43001)]. A closed subset \(F\) of a locally compact group \(G\) is locally \(p\)-Ditkin if for every \(T \in CV_p (G)\), and every \(u \in A_p (G)\) which vanishes on \(F\), the condition \({\text supp}\, (u T) \subseteq F\) implies that \(u T = 0\) (\(A_p (G)\) is the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebra of \(G\) and \(CV_p (G)\) is the Banach algebra of the convolution operators on \(L^p (G)\)). The classical case, when \(G\) is abelian, is \(p = 2\) (\(A_2 (G) = L^1 (\widehat G)\) and \(CV_2 (G) = L^\infty (\widehat G)\)). The main ingredient is the construction of a suitable continuous linear map \(P\) from \({\mathcal L} [L^p (G)]\) into \({\mathcal L} [L^p (H)]\).
