The authors prove the sharp Gårding inequality for pseudo-differential operators \(P\) of order \(m\) on a compact Lie group \(G\), namely \[ \text{Re}(Pu,u)_{L^2(G)}\geq - C\| u\|^2_{H^{(m-1)/2}(G)}. \] Note that the standard assumption \(p(x,\eta)\geq 0\) for the local symbol \(p\in S^m_{1,0}\) of \(P\) has not invariant meaning on the manifold \(G\). Reference is then given to the general theory of the authors [Pseudo-differential operators and symmetries. Background analysis and advanced topics. Pseudo-Differential Operators 2. Basel: Birkhäuser. xiv, 709 p. (2010; Zbl 1193.35261)] for pseudo-differential operators on Lie groups, where the non-commutative analogue of the phase space is \(G\times\widehat G\), with \(\widehat G\) the unitary dual of \(G\). In this setting the global symbol of \(P\) is a full matrix-valued function \(\sigma_P(x,\eta)\) defined for \((x,[\eta])\in G\times\widehat G\). The positivity assumption, granting sharp Gårding inequality, reads then as positivity of the matrix \(\sigma_P(x,\eta)\).
