For functions defined on an \(n\)-dimensional rectangle with values in a metric semigroup (i.e., with a metric which is invariant under addition) a Helly type selection theorem is shown: If a sequence of such functions has bounded total variation (in the sense of Hildebrandt-Leonov) and is pointwise compact, then it contains a pointwise convergent subsequence. Also an analogue for functions with values in a reflexive separable Banach space is obtained: If a sequence of such functions has bounded total variation and is pointwise bounded, then it contains a pointwise weakly convergent subsequence. To understand the notation and terminology, it is strongly advised to read part I of the paper [ibid. 370, No. 2, 672--686 (2010; Zbl 1200.26018)].
