Let \(A\) be a commutative regular semisimple Banach algebra with spectrum \(\Delta(A)\). For a closed subset \(E\) of \(\Delta(A)\), let \(k(E)\) (resp., \(j(E)\)) denote the largest (resp., smallest) ideal in \(A\) whose hull is \(E\). The set \(E\) is called a weak spectral set (resp., a weak Ditkin set) if there exists \(n\in\mathbb{N}\) such that \(a^n\in\overline{j(E)}\) (resp., \(a^n\in\overline{a^nj(E)}\)) for every \(a\in k(E)\). The smallest such number \(n\) is denoted \(\xi(E)\) (resp., \(\eta(E)\)). In this interesting paper, the author continues his previous investigation [J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 254, No.\,4, 987--1002 (2008; Zbl 1152.46041)] of weak spectral and weak Ditkin sets. He is mainly concerned with the study of the unions and intersections of weak spectral sets and weak Ditkin sets in \(\Delta(A)\) and the corresponding values of \(\xi\) and \(\eta\). He especially focuses on \(C^n([0, 1])\), the algebra of \(n\)-times continuously differentiable functions on \([0,1]\). For example, he shows that, for every closed subset \(E\) of \([0,1]\) (which is equal to \(\Delta(C^n([0,1]))\)), \(\xi(E)=\eta(E)\) and either \(\xi(E)=1\) or \(\xi(E)=n+1\). In the final section of the paper, the author studies the above mentioned notions for the projective tensor product \(A\widehat{\otimes}B\) of commutative Banach algebras. Especially, he focuses on the case \(A(G)\widehat{\otimes}B\), where \(A(G)\) is the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group.
