A polynomial sequence \(\{p_n(x)\}_{n\in {\mathbb N}}\) with real coefficients is of \textit{binomial type} if \(\deg p_n = n\) and \(p_n(x+y)=\sum_{k=0}^n \binom{n}{k} p_k(x)p_{n-k}(y)\). In the main result of this paper a new characterization of polynomial sequences of binomial type is given via determinantal form. This form allows to prove known and new properties of such polynomial sequences only by using elementary tools of matrix algebra. Relationships with \(\delta\)-functionals, \(\delta\)-operators, and generating functions are presented. The approach is illustrated on several classical examples of polynomial sequences as well as on a non-classical example.
