A posteriori error estimates are developed for the finite element method (FEM) with lumped masses for the wave equation. In different spatial dimensions different principles are revealed for the error estimation employing either a set of elliptic sub-problems or jumps of solution gradients across element boundaries. Superconvergence results known for elliptic and parabolic equations are extended to the case of the mass lumped FEM for the wave equation.
