The authors consider a two-species nonautonomous Kolmogorov type predator-prey system \[ x' = xf(t,x,y) , \quad y' = yg(t,x,y) . \] Sufficient and necessary conditions for the persistence and average persistence, respectively, are given in two theorems. Consequences of this for Lotka-Volterra, Holling and chemostat type systems are discussed. Also, the equivalence of persistence of several kinds for the case of almost periodic (or periodic) systems of the considered type is discussed.
