It was known in the 19th century that a quintic equation could be solved in terms of elliptic functions. Starting from consideration of the symmetry group of the icosahedron, the authors develop an algorithm, that involves theta functions, and avoids ambiguities and errors that were in earlier work. The algorithm has been tested by implementation on a personal microcomputer.
