Let \(M\) be a hyperbolic manifold with finitely generated fundamental group and \(c_{1}, c_{2}\) be two transverse geodesic cycles with dim(\(c_{1}\))+ dim(\(c_{2}\))= dim \(M\) and \(c_{1} \cap c_{2} \not= \emptyset\). Following ideas of \textit{J. J. Millson} and \textit{M. S. Raghunathan} [Geometry and Analysis, Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 90, 103-124 (1981; Zbl 0514.22007)], it is proved that \(c_{1}\) and \(c_{2}\) lift to a finite cover of \(M\) as two submanifolds \(F_{1}\) and \(F_{2}\) with \([F_{1}][F_{2}] \not=0\). This result implies in particular that the compact hyperbolic manifolds constructed by \textit{M. Gromov} and \textit{I. Piatetski-Shapiro} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Etud. Sci. 66, 93-103 (1988; Zbl 0649.22007)] have nontrivial virtual Betti numbers.
