This paper deals with the system of neutral functional differential equations \[ (x_1(t)-c_2x_2(t-r_2))'=-F_1(x_1(t))+G_1(x_2(t-r_2)), \] \[ (x_2(t)-c_1x_1(t-r_1))'=-F_2(x_2(t))+G_2(x_1(t-r_1)), \] where \(r_i>0\), \(c_i\in [0, 1)\), and \(F_i, G_i\in C({\mathbb R}^1)\), \(i=1, 2\). By using some comparison techniques and the invariance of the positive limit set, it is shown that every bounded solution of the system mentioned above tends to an equilibrium, provided that \(F_i\) \((i=1, 2)\) is strictly increasing on \({\mathbb R}^1\) with some other additional assumptions. The motivation of this paper is that there is an error in the argument of a result in a paper by \textit{W. Xiong} and \textit{B. Liu} J. Math. Anal. Appl. 313, No.~2, 754--760 (2006; Zbl 1102.34062)]. The author does not only point out and correct the mistake, but also generalizes the corresponding results.
