The authors introduce the class of epsilon-strongly graded rings, and show that it properly contains both the class of strongly graded rings and the class of unital partial crossed products. The authors determine when an epsilon-strongly graded ring is separable over its principal component. As a consequence, they simultaneously generalize the results from [\textit{C. Năstăsescu} et al., J. Algebra 123, No. 2, 397--413 (1989; Zbl 0673.16026)] and [\textit{D. Bagio} et al., Commun. Algebra 38, No. 2, 496--508 (2010; Zbl 1200.16047)] on separable ring extensions where the top ring is graded by a group with some additional conditions. The authors also show that the class of unital partial crossed products appears in the class of epsilon-strongly graded rings similarly to how the classical crossed products appear in the class of strongly graded rings. As a consequence, they obtain, in the special case of unital partial crossed products, a short proof of a general result by Dokuchaev, Exel and Simón concerning when graded rings can be presented as partial crossed products [\textit{M. Dokuchaev} et al., J. Algebra 320, No. 8, 3278--3310 (2008; Zbl 1160.16016)]. The authors also provide some interesting examples of separable epsilon-strongly graded rings, with finite as well as infinite grading groups. In particular, they obtain an answer to a question raised by \textit{L. Le Bruyn} et al. [Graded orders. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (1988)].
