Equations of equilibrium are constructed for an entirely Lagrangian nonlinear shell theory. Several consistently simplified versions for the first-approximation theory are discussed in dependence of moderate or large rotations. These equations allow an exact variational formulation. A unified theory of superposition of deformations in thin shells is outlined. This paper is of great interest for all scientists interested in basic equations of nonlinear theory of thin shells.
