The paper deals with \(C^*\)-algebras and Ruelle algebras associated with the so-called mixing Smale spaces. These are certain homeomorphisms \(\phi\) of a compact metric space, \((X,d)\) which include Anosov diffeomorphisms and shifts of finite type. One can define stable and unstable equivalence: two elements, \(x\), \(y\) are called stably (unstably) equivalent, if \(d(\phi^n(x),\phi^n(y))\to 0\) when \(n\to+\infty\) (\(n\to-\infty\) respectively). Let \(G_s\), \(G_u\) be the corresponding equivalence relations (principal groupoids), topologized, with Haar systems. The authors consider their \(C^*\)-algebras \(S= C^*(G_s)\), \(U= C^*(G_u)\). In the case of a shift of finite type, these are the AF-algebras studied by \textit{W. Krieger} [Invent. Math. 56, 239-250 (1980; Zbl 0431.54024)]. The main theorems of the paper say that the groupoids \(G_s\), \(G_u\) are amenable in the sense of Renault and the algebras \(S\), \(U\) are simple. The same things are proved also for the groupoids \(G_s\times\mathbb{Z}\), \(G_u\times \mathbb{Z}\) and the corresponding Ruelle algebras \(R_s\), \(R_u\).
