In this paper, the author considers the variational problem \[ w\mapsto\int_{\Omega}f(x,Dw)\;dx, \] where \(\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n}\) is a bounded open set with \(n\geq2\). The integrand \(f\) satisfies the usual \(p\)-growth in the sense that it is assumed that \[ \nu\big(s^2+|\xi|^2\big)^{\frac{p}{2}}\leq f(x,\xi)\leq L\big(s^2+|\xi|^2\big)^{\frac{p}{2}}, \] for some \(0<\nu\leq L<+\infty\) and each \(x\), \(\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\). Moreover, \(f\) is assumed to be of class \(\mathcal{C}^{2}\) in the \(\xi\)-variable on its domain. It ought to be noted that since \(\xi\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\), it thus follows that the author considers here the scalar setting -- i.e., the setting in which \(w\;: \;\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{R}\) so that \((Dw)(x)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\) for each \(x\) in the domain of the gradient. In addition, a standard assumption is imposed on the Hessian \(D^2f\). The main contribution is to deduce a higher integrability result for the gradient of an \(\omega\)-minimizer of the functional. Because the techniques utilized are relatively well-known in the regularity literature, the paper is very readable for any researcher with some familiarity of regularity theory methods. As such, this paper should be of interest to anyone with an interest in regularity theory or, more generally, the calculus of variations.
