In this short note, the author mainly focuses on how concrete mathematical models became abstract models, that is the shift in the usage of the word ``model'' in mathematics. There is a loose connection between late 19th-century polytechnical tradition in the German-speaking countries (mainly Germany and Switzerland here) and the evolution of the usage of the word ``model'', which is skimmed over in this note.
