This paper mainly deals with the extension to arbitrary operator ideals of the characterization of the bounded approximation property (BAP in short) given by \textit{G. Godefroy} and \textit{N. J. Kalton} [Stud. Math. 159, No. 1, 121--141 (2003; Zbl 1059.46058)] in terms of Lipschitz maps and of Lipschitz-free spaces. The notion of bounded approximation properties with respect to operator ideals goes back to \textit{E. Oja} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 323, No. 1, 666--679 (2006; Zbl 1112.46016)]. Given Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\), write \(\operatorname{Lip}_0(X,Y)\) for the Banach space of those Lipschitz maps from \(X\) to \(Y\) which vanish at \(0\) and let \(\mathcal{F}(X)\) be the Lipschitz-free space on \(X\). Recall that \(\operatorname{Lip}_0(X,Y)\equiv \mathcal{L}(\mathcal{F}(X),Y)\) by means of the linearization map \(L_f\) associated to every Lipschitz map~\(f\). Given an operator ideal \(\mathcal{A}\), write \(\operatorname{Lip}_{\mathcal{A}}(X,Y)\) for the linear subspace of \(\operatorname{Lip}_0(X,Y)\) consisting of those Lipschitz maps \(f\) for which \(L_f\in \mathcal{A}\). For \(\lambda\geqslant 1\), the Banach space \(X\) is said to have the Lipschitz \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP if the identity operator on \(X\) belongs to the closure in the compact open topology of the elements in \(\operatorname{Lip}_{\mathcal{A}}(X,Y)\) whose norm is less than or equal to \(\lambda\). In this paper, several characterizations of the Lipschitz \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP are given. In particular, it is shown that the Lipschitz \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP is equivalent to the (linear) \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP for Lipschitz-free spaces. Also, for a big class of operator ideals including the one of compact operators and the one of weakly compact operators, the \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP of a Banach space \(X\) is equivalent to the \(\mathcal{A}\)-\(\lambda\)-BAP of \(\mathcal{F}(X)\). Finally, the paper also studies the three-space problem for the Lipschitz bounded approximation property with respect to an arbitrary ideal.
