The authors focus on the numerical difficulties with a singular Hessian matrix that arise from the discretization of a degenerate convex minimization problem. The discretization process is based on finite element methods (FEMs). They propose the gradient stabilization with no particular assumptions on the optimal design problem. The properties of the quasi-interpolation operator and related inequalities are studied, leading to convergence results. General error estimates and a posteriori error control are obtained. Numerical experiments of the lowest schemes for the optimal design problem are conducted on two different domains.
