A problem solving environment (pse) can be defined as a human interface to hardware and software to assist the user in the solution of a given class of problems, e.g. partial differential equations (pdes). The PDE pse developed at KFA Jülich/ZAM intends to support the user in the improvement and design of new pde software as well as in the accurate and efficient solution of a specific problem. Special emphasis is laid on interactive pre- and postprocessing of results which include syntactical and semantical checks on the correctness of the formulated problem; the PDE pse also provides features for the submission of jobs to the appropriate computer systems which at KFA/ZAM range from IBM 4381 to CRAY X-MP/22.
