A toric variety \(X\) is a normal algebraic variety on which a complete algebraic torus \(T\) acts, and which admits an equivariant embedding of \(T\) as a dense open subvariety. This notation was mentioned in the early 1970's, and began a new chapter in the interplay between combinatorics and algebraic geometry. The combinatorial nature of these varieties expresses itself in every aspect of their theory, which consists largely of a dictionary between geometric constructs and combinatorial objects. The author of this paper gives a new entry to this dictionary by showing that the \(K\)-theory and equivariant \(K\)-theory of a toric variety can be naturally explained in terms of the scissors congruence theory of polyhedra. In particular, a complete combinatorial description of the equivariant \(K\)-theory of a smooth compact toric variety is obtained.
