The authors answer the open question raised by \textit{B. E. Rhoades} in [Contemp. Math. 72, 233--245 (1988; Zbl 0649.54024)] and prove a fixed point theorem under a contractive condition without continuity of the mapping even at the fixed point. An example is given to validate the main result. The main result is applicable to neural nets under suitable conditions.
