The author introduces some operators on the Bergman space \(A^ 2\) on the unit ball that generalize the classical (big) Hankel operator. For such operators the author proves boundedness, compactness, and Schatten-ideal property criteria. These criteria extend known results. These new operators are defined in terms of a symbol. Let \(f\) be a holomorphic function on the unit ball \(B\) in \(C^ n\). Set \[ \Delta_ j F(w,z)= \sum_{| \alpha|<j} {{\partial^ \alpha f(z)}\over {\alpha!}} (w-z)^ \alpha. \] Now let, \[ H_{f;j}= \int_ B \overline{-\Delta_ j f(w,z)} K(z,w) g(w)dm(w), \;\;\text{and} \;H_{f;j}'= \int_ B \overline{\Delta_ j f(z,w)} K(z,w) g(w) dm(w). \] The author proves that the operators \(H_{f;j}\) and \(H_{f;j}'\) are bounded on the Bergman space \(A^ 2(B)\), if and only if \(f\) belongs to the Bloch space \({\mathcal B}\), and they are compact if and only if \(f\) belongs to the little Bloch space. Moreover, it is proved that for \(2\leq p<\infty\), these operators belong to the Schatten ideal \(S_ p\) if and only if the symbol \(f\) is in the Besov space \(B_ p\). The author also gives several different characterizations of the norm on the Besov spaces \(B_ p\). In particular it is proved that the Besov spaces are the mean oscillation spaces in the Bergman metric, for \(1\leq p<\infty\).
