The authors study the two dimensional dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation in the subcritical case. They prove the persistence of regularity for the solutions in the Besov spaces with small initial data. The result is achieved by the method of integral equations and the contraction mapping argument. From the stated persistency theorem one can recover the existence results in the Lebesgue spaces previously obtained by \textit{J. Wu} [Electron. J. Differ. Equ. 1998, Paper No. 16, 10 p. (1998; Zbl 0898.35077)] and \textit{C. J. Niche} and \textit{M. E. Schonbek} [Commun. Math. Phys. 276, No. 1, 93--115 (2007; Zbl 1194.76040)].
