Let \(X\) be an infinite metrizable compact abelian group and \(\mathfrak u=\{u_n\}\) a sequence of its characters. A subgroup \(Y\) is said to be characterized by \(\mathfrak u\) if it consists of those elements \(x\in X\) for which \(\lim_{n\to \infty} u_n(x)=0\). It is proved that every characterized subgroup of a compact metrizable abelian group admits a locally quasi-convex Polish group topology. It is also proved that if \(X\) is an infinite compact metrizable abelian group and \(K\) an uncountable Kronecker set, then the subgroup \(\langle K\rangle\) generated by \(K\) cannot be characterized. Furthermore, let \(\mathfrak u=\{u_n\}\) be a sequence of elements of the dual group \(\widehat{X}\) for which there exists a Hausdorff group topology such that \(\lim_{n\to \infty}u_n=0\). Denote by \((\widehat{X},\mathfrak u)\) the group \(\widehat{X}\) furnished with the finest group topology with this property. The author calculates the dual group of \((\widehat{X},\mathfrak u)\) and its von Neumann radical. A characterization of reflexive groups \((\widehat{X},\mathfrak u)\) is given. The paper contains other interesting assertions.
