Vortex shedding in unsteady flow past a thin plate placed normal to the flow it studied using a Taylor-Galerkin/pressure-correction finite element algorithm. The flows are considered over restricted time periods starting from some initial steady-state, eventually encountering a time after which vortices are shed, prior to the onset of regular periodic shedding. The Strouhal number, St, which is evaluated for Reynolds numbers of 126, 250 and 500, reflects excellent agreement with both the experimental and numerical data available.
