There are two classes of ``affine'' extremal surfaces, defined as critical points of area integrals, namely, the so-called unimodular extremal surfaces and the centroaffine extremal surfaces. Considering such surfaces as local graphs, the Euler-Lagrange equations for both classes are of fourth order. This makes it plausible that both classes are large and that more examples are very welcome that could stimulate further investigations. The surprising idea of the authors is to consider necessary and sufficient conditions for all subclasses that are unimodular extremal and centroaffine extremal at the same time (Theorem 1.1). (The metric used can be semi-Riemannian). This way the authors in fact succeed to obtain new examples for both classes.
